Defining digital art

September 29, 2005

Emerging areas are by definition hard to define. This is what makes them so exciting. They are a free for all, with everything in the medium/media still to be played for.

Is this why digital art is so hard to define? Is it the same as media arts, interactive art, new media, net art, software art? Subtle differences arise in the terms, and also betray radical differences over approach and ideological stance in the terms.

To a certain extent the problem lies in practitioners and theorists not stamping enough authority on how it should be viewed, and what it should be called. The area of digital art is evolving rapidly, and it needs some definitions of genres and areas for these help formulate a narrative arc and history. Or perhaps I feel like this because of my predilection for the Borgesian.
